What was reported

Video fault: zero signal from the video antenna and heavy breakup with the drone only a few feet away. The goggles worked with other drones. The video transmitter then appeared not to be powering on at all.

Our take

Not bench-tested by us. No flight-side faults were reported; the fault looks limited to the HDZero video link. Could be a VTX setting or a loose antenna (cheap fix), a loose VTX power or ribbon connection, or worst case a dead HDZero Whoop VTX to replace. A Matek R24 ELRS receiver was fitted in-house before it shipped.

Repair hint

Check VTX power, ribbon and U.FL antenna first; spare HDZero Whoop VTX = likely fix.

Product details

Are you looking to buy LUCKY DIP · EMAX Hawk Apex 3.5" HDZero (PNP + ELRS): Video Fault Return, Sold As-Is in Australia?

LUCKY DIP: faulty customer return, sold as-is. No returns, no warranty.

This listing is for one returned EMAX Hawk Apex 3.5" HDZero (PNP), not a new unit. It came back to us with a video problem in February 2025 and has been sitting on the returns shelf ever since. We could pay to freight it back to the overseas supplier, but we'd rather it went to someone who'll use it: a tinkerer, a repairer, or someone who just wants a bargain.

How the price works: it starts at $400 and drops every night at midnight for 30 days, down to a $150 floor. The floor price only lasts 24 hours. If nobody grabs it, the price goes back up to $400 and the 30-day countdown starts again. Wait too long and you could miss it, or have to wait another month.

About the photos: these are photos of a new one, for reference only. They don’t show this unit or its condition. Want photos of the actual item? Email us at hello@phaserfpv.com.au and we’ll send some.

What was reported

  • A video fault: zero signal from the video antenna, and heavy breakup with the drone only a few feet away.
  • The same goggles worked fine with other drones, so the fault points to the quad's video system.
  • The owner then noticed the video transmitter didn't appear to be turning on at all.

Our take

We haven't bench-tested this one. Nothing was reported wrong with the flight side (flight controller, ESC, motors). The fault looks confined to the HDZero video link. Possible causes, from cheapest to most expensive:

  • Could score: a VTX setting (power level, channel or pit mode), a loose U.FL antenna or a damaged antenna lead. All are cheap or free fixes.
  • Likely: a loose or damaged VTX power or ribbon connection. A careful look and a re-seat or re-solder may fix it.
  • Worst case: a dead HDZero Whoop VTX. Swap in a replacement VTX and you have a near-complete race quad for well under retail.

This unit was a PNP version, and we fitted a Matek R24 ELRS receiver in-house before it shipped, so it should already be ELRS-ready.

Who it's for

Pilots who can solder and diagnose a video link, HDZero users with a spare VTX in the drawer, and anyone after a Hawk Apex frame, motors and AIO for parts. Not for anyone who wants to fly straight out of the box.

Chips on the board (for parts hunters)

  • MCU: STMicro STM32F722 (F7 flight controller)

Chips are as listed by the manufacturer for this model, not checked on this exact unit. They make it a handy donor for repairs.
