Will my battery fit in a Bat-Safe LiPo / Li-ion safe box?

Put in your battery's size and we will tell you which Bat-Safe boxes take it, which ones do not, and whether the watt-hours are inside the safe limit. Works for LiPo drone packs, e-bike and scooter batteries, power tool packs and golf buggy batteries. No battery knowledge needed.

What are you charging?

This sets the cell type and tells us whether the charging plug is worth worrying about.

Measure your battery

Measure the widest points, including any wrap or bracket that sticks out. Order does not matter, we try it every way up.

Capacity

Optional

Every Bat-Safe has a watt-hour limit. Fill in whichever boxes match what is printed on your battery and we will work the watt-hours out. Two numbers is usually enough.

How many are going in?

Getting power into the box

Charging inside a Bat-Safe means running a lead through the fire collar grommet in the lid and shutting the latch. A round Australian three-pin plug will not go through that hole. What you need depends on your charger.

Where to find your numbers

  • E-bike and scooter packs: the label on the side, usually something like 48V 15.6Ah.
  • Tool batteries: printed on the base, like 18V 5.0Ah.
  • FPV and RC LiPos: the sticker on the pack, like 6S 5000mAh.
  • Anything else: volts times amp-hours gives you watt-hours.

The XXL is independently tested

LGAI Technological Center (APPLUS) tested the Bat-Safe XXL on 24 October 2024 against ADR P911. Lithium-ion batteries were forced into thermal runaway inside the closed box. No flame escaped, nothing was fired out, the box held together and the outside stayed under 100°C.

Leave yourself some room

A battery that fills the box to the last millimetre is a battery you will fight with every time. Aim for a centimetre or so spare, and remember the charge lead has to sit in there too.

Questions we get asked most

Is the watt-hour rating for one battery or everything in the box?

It is the total the box is built to contain. One battery right up to the rating is fine. So a single 777Wh pack in the XXL is fine, and so is seven 6S 5000mAh packs, because those add up to about the same.

My battery says 48V 15.6Ah. What is that in watt-hours?

Multiply the two: 48 times 15.6 is 749Wh. That is what the volts and Ah tab above does. If your pack is listed in mAh, divide by 1000 first, so 5000mAh is 5Ah.

How many batteries fit in one box?

Put your size in and each box that fits will tell you roughly how many it holds. The count is whichever runs out first, the space or the watt-hour rating, and on the bigger boxes it is usually the watt-hours. Six 6S 5000mAh packs is about the XXL's limit, for example, when far more would physically go in.

Treat the number as a guide. It assumes tidy stacking and no room for leads, so in practice you will get one or two fewer.

Can I put the charger inside the box?

Keep the charger outside where you can. Run the leads through the fire collar grommet in the lid and shut the latch.

Slot-in chargers for tool batteries have to go inside, and that is fine. One catch worth knowing: a standard Australian 240V plug will not pass through the grommet. Only the plug end is the problem, so an IEC extension cable sorts it out.

Does this work for e-bike, scooter and tool batteries, or only drone packs?

All of them. A Bat-Safe contains a lithium battery fire whatever the battery came out of. Most people buying the XL and XXL now are charging e-bike packs, tool batteries and golf buggy batteries rather than drone LiPos.

What exactly should I measure?

The widest points of the pack, including the plug, the wires and any shrink wrap or bracket that sticks out. If your battery slides into a rail or mount on the bike, measure the battery on its own, out of the mount.

It fits, but the tool says the capacity is too high. What now?

Step up a size if there is one. If you are already on the XXL, email us with the make and model and we will tell you honestly where you stand.

The watt-hour figure is the load the box was tested to contain, so it is the one number we would not push. A battery that fits the space but beats the rating is still a battery the box was never asked to hold.

Is the Bat-Safe actually tested, or is it just a steel box?

Tested, and by someone independent. LGAI Technological Center (APPLUS) tested the XXL on 24 October 2024 against ADR P911, the standard for containing a lithium battery fire in transport. They put lithium-ion batteries inside, forced them into thermal runaway by overcharging, and shut the lid.

All five criteria passed:

  • The outside of the box never reached 200°C, or 100°C for any sustained period.
  • No flame escaped.
  • No projectiles escaped.
  • The box held together.
  • The vents in the lid handled the gas as they were meant to.

Does it matter which way round I type length, width and height?

No. We try your battery every way up, all six of them, and use whichever one fits best. So long as you can physically turn the battery and slide it in, the tool counts that as a fit. The one thing that does have a fixed direction is the charging plug, which is why we ask you to mark which face it is on.
